Characterization of juvenile play in rats: importance of sex of self and sex of partner.

Researchers quantified social play behavior in juvenile rats across 12 days to examine the effects of sex, partner sex, age, and partner familiarity. Play behavior was evaluated in same-sex and mixed-sex pairings using paired and repeated-measures analyses, measuring overall play frequency as well as specific components (pouncing, pinning, chasing, and boxing). The impact of partner familiarity was tested by introducing a novel play partner on postnatal day 33.
What was found
Sex differences were observed in total play frequency and in specific behavioral components including chasing, pouncing, pinning, and boxing. Males significantly modified their play behavior depending on whether their partner was same- or opposite-sex, whereas females were more sensitive to the familiarity of the partner.
