Sleep period (onset to offset) averaged 6.9-8.5 hr, with actual sleep durations of 5.7-7.1 hr. There was a seasonal difference of nearly 1 hr between summer and winter sleep, with daily duration variation linked to onset time rather than offset time. Sleep onset occurred an average of 3.3 hr after sunset, and awakening was usually before sunrise near the nadir of daily ambient temperature. Napping occurred on <7% of days in winter and <22% of days in summer.
Why it matters
These findings challenge the assumption that industrialization reduced human sleep from an 8-hour ancestral norm, showing that natural pre-industrial sleep durations match the lower range of modern industrial societies and are tightly coupled to natural temperature and light cycles.
