What was done

Prospective longitudinal analysis of 159 men across socioeconomic strata participating in the Study of Adult Development. Midlife Eriksonian psychosocial development was coded from interview narratives between ages 30 and 47. In late life (ages 75–85), participants completed performance-based neuropsychological assessments measuring global cognitive status, executive functioning, and memory, alongside the Geriatric Depression Scale. The authors assessed whether midlife psychosocial maturity predicted late-life cognition, controlling for education and adolescent intelligence, and tested late-life depression as a mediator.

What was found

The abstract reports directional outcomes without providing numerical values, effect sizes, or test statistics. Higher midlife Eriksonian psychosocial development was significantly associated with better global cognitive functioning, better executive functioning, and lower levels of depression 3 to 4 decades later. No significant association was found with late-life memory. Late-life depression mediated the relationship between midlife psychosocial development and both global cognition and executive functioning.

Why it matters

This study provides multi-decade longitudinal evidence that adult psychosocial engagement relates to preserved executive function and lower depressive symptoms in late life, identifying late-life emotional health as a potential mediator of cognitive aging.

Limits

The study sample was entirely male (n = 159), limiting generalizability to women. The abstract omits all numerical effect sizes, confidence intervals, and p-values. As an observational cohort, residual confounding cannot be ruled out.
