What was done

Ten healthy adults (6 men, 4 women) participated in a pilot randomized crossover trial comparing a single 10-minute session of seated Chinese head massage therapy to a control condition of sitting quietly in the same chair with eyes closed for 10 minutes. The primary outcomes evaluated cardiac autonomic nervous system activity via heart rate variability (HRV) parameters, including total power (TP), high frequency (HF), normalized HF, pre-ejection period, and heart rate.

What was found

Head massage led to an increase in TP that persisted up to 20 minutes post-intervention, reaching statistical significance at 10 minutes (relative change from baseline: 66% for massage vs. -6.6% for control; p = 0.017). HF also peaked at 10 minutes post-massage but was not statistically significant (relative change: 59.4% vs. 4%; p = 0.139). Head massage decreased heart rate by more than three-fold compared to the control intervention.

Why it matters

This study provides preliminary evidence that a brief session of head massage can acutely increase overall heart rate variability and promote parasympathetic activity.

Limits

The study is limited by an extremely small sample size (n = 10), lack of clinical endpoints, only evaluating a single 10-minute acute session with short-term follow-up (up to 20 minutes), and a lack of statistically significant changes in specific frequency components such as high-frequency HRV.
