Insomnia and Telomere Length in Older Adults.

What was done

Researchers evaluated 126 older adults (aged 60-88 years; 45 insomnia cases and 81 controls) categorized via DSM-IV criteria for primary insomnia and ICSD-2 criteria for general insomnia. Peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC) telomere length was measured using real-time quantitative PCR (qPCR). An analysis of covariance model adjusted for sex and body mass index (BMI) tested whether insomnia diagnosis and age group (60-69 years vs. 70-88 years) interacted to predict telomere length.

What was found

After adjusting for BMI and sex, the interaction between age group and insomnia diagnosis was statistically significant (P = 0.04). In participants aged 70-88 years, telomere length was significantly shorter in insomnia cases (mean [SD] = 0.59 [0.2]) than in controls (mean [SD] = 0.78 [0.4], P = 0.04). In adults aged 60-69 years, telomere length did not differ significantly between insomnia cases and controls (P = 0.44).

Why it matters

The paper shows an association between clinically defined insomnia and shorter leukocyte telomere length specifically in adults aged 70 and older, highlighting a potential cellular aging mechanism linking late-life sleep disturbance to aging-related morbidities.
