What was done

A systematic review and random-effects meta-analysis was performed searching PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane through May 22, 2015, to evaluate the association between chronic periodontitis and erectile dysfunction in observational studies. Two independent reviewers extracted data, and subgroup and sensitivity analyses were planned.

What was found

From 250 identified records, four observational studies were included, covering 38,111 cases and 174,807 controls. Random-effects meta-analysis showed a significant positive association between chronic periodontitis and erectile dysfunction (OR = 3.07, 95% CI: 1.87–5.05, p < 0.001). Statistical heterogeneity across the studies was extremely high (I² = 98%).

Why it matters

The findings synthesize observational evidence linking oral inflammatory disease to vasculogenic erectile dysfunction, highlighting periodontitis as a potential co-occurring vascular risk factor.

Limits

The analysis included only four observational studies, precluding causal conclusions. Statistical heterogeneity was severe (I² = 98%), and the abstract notes that differences in population social characteristics and unmeasured confounders limit the decisiveness of the pooled effect estimate.
