What was done

Researchers tested whether loading mature resting murine macrophages with exogenous peroxidase enabled them to kill Mycobacterium tuberculosis in the presence or absence of hydrogen peroxide. Phagocytosis and bactericidal activity were assessed and compared against Listeria monocytogenes.

Peroxidase-loaded macrophages actively ingested M. tuberculosis but showed no significant mycobactericidal activity, despite M. tuberculosis being susceptible to the Klebanoff system in vitro. Conversely, both peroxidase-loaded and unloaded macrophages efficiently killed Listeria monocytogenes. The abstract reported no quantitative figures or statistical metrics.
