Odors enhance slow-wave activity in non-rapid eye movement sleep.

What was done
Polysomnography was recorded in 34 healthy adults (19 women, 15 men; mean age 26.5 ± 2.5 years) over a single night. Participants were exposed via a computer-controlled olfactometer to one of four odorants: lavender oil (n = 13), vetiver oil (n = 5), vanillin (n = 12), or ammonium sulfide (n = 4). Odorants were delivered for durations of 5, 10, and 20 seconds every 9 to 15 minutes during sleep to assess spectral EEG changes and K-complex occurrence during non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep.
What was found
Odor presentation during NREM sleep increased spectral power in the delta (0.5–4 Hz) and slow spindle (9–12 Hz) frequency bands. This power increase was proportionate to the duration of the odor pulse (5, 10, or 20 s). Odor stimulation did not alter the frequency of K-complexes. Specific numerical values for EEG power increases or K-complex frequencies were not reported in the abstract.
Why it matters
Unlike other sensory modalities that cause cortical arousal or evoke K-complexes, olfactory stimuli during NREM sleep appear to enhance slow-wave activity without triggering arousal responses, providing a physiological mechanism for how odors may deepen sleep.
Limits
The study had a small sample size overall (n = 34), with very small subgroups per odorant (n = 4 for ammonium sulfide, n = 5 for vetiver). It examined only a single night in young, healthy adults, and clinical outcomes, next-day function, or long-term sleep architecture effects were not evaluated.
