Researchers analyzed 25 Mucuna pruriens (MP) seed samples from Africa, Latin America, and Asia to measure levodopa (LD) content across dried, roasted, and boiled preparations. In four patients with Parkinson's disease, they evaluated LD pharmacokinetics and motor response comparing MP extract against standard LD plus a dopa-decarboxylase inhibitor (DDCI).

What was found

Median LD concentration was 5.29% in dried MP seeds and 5.3% in roasted powder, while boiling reduced LD content by up to 70%. In four patients, MP extract given at an equivalent LD dose yielded less clinical benefit and a 3.5-fold lower median AUC compared to LD+DDCI formulations.

Why it matters

Mucuna pruriens is frequently explored as a low-cost, natural levodopa source for low-income settings, but this study indicates that without a decarboxylase inhibitor, at least 3.5 times the LD dose is required to achieve comparable systemic exposure.
