Meta-analysis of published peer-reviewed studies (identified via PubMed, MEDLINE, and PsycINFO) examining continuous associations between delayed reward discounting (DRD) of monetary gains and addictive behaviors (alcohol, tobacco, cannabis, stimulants, opiates, and gambling). Effect sizes were pooled using random-effects models (Pearson's r). Moderation analyses examined addiction severity versus quantity-frequency (QF), addictive behavior type, and DRD assessment modality. What was found
The meta-analysis revealed a small, highly significant continuous association between steeper DRD and addictive behaviors (r = 0.14, P < 10^-14). Effect sizes were significantly larger for addiction severity measures compared with QF measures (P = 0.01). No significant differences were observed across addictive behavior categories (P = 0.30) or DRD assessment methods (P = 0.90). Publication bias indices indicated a modest impact of unpublished findings.
