Two cortical networks connected to the adrenal medulla were identified: a larger network involving frontal motor areas (supplementary and cingulate motor areas) and somatosensory cortex, and a smaller network originating in the medial prefrontal cortex (including pregenual and subgenual anterior cingulate cortex).
Why it matters
This establishes direct multisynaptic pathways linking cortical regions involved in movement, cognition, and affect to sympathetic autonomic output, providing an anatomical substrate for psychosomatic illness and stress physiology.
Limits
Conducted in non-human primates with sample size not reported in the abstract. Demonstrates anatomical connectivity rather than functional physiological activation, endocrine output, or clinical human outcomes.
