Researchers measured moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) and cardiovascular health indicators in the Hadza, a modern hunter-gatherer population in Northern Tanzania. MVPA was assessed using continuous heart rate monitoring in 46 participants recruited from two camps. Blood pressure was measured in 198 participants as part of a broader health survey, and cardiovascular biomarkers (C-reactive protein, total cholesterol, HDL, LDL, and triglycerides) were measured in a subset of 23 participants.

What was found

Hadza participants engaged in 134.92 ± 8.6 min/day of MVPA across their lifespan, exceeding levels in large United States epidemiological cohorts by more than 14-fold. The study reported a low prevalence of hypertension and optimal cardiovascular biomarker profiles, though exact numerical values for blood pressure, C-reactive protein, and lipid subfractions were not reported in the abstract.

Why it matters
