Acute Effects of Lateral Thigh Foam Rolling on Arterial Tissue Perfusion Determined by Spectral Doppler and Power Doppler Ultrasound.

What was done

Twenty-one healthy young adults (age 25 ± 2 years, body weight 74 ± 9 kg) underwent lateral thigh foam rolling exercises. Arterial tissue perfusion at three sites (trochanteric region, mid-portion, and distal tibial insertion) was assessed using spectral Doppler ultrasound (peak flow [Vmax], time average velocity maximum [TAMx], time average velocity mean [TAMn], and resistive index [RI]) and semiquantitative power Doppler ultrasound evaluated by 4 blinded investigators. Measurements were taken at resting baseline, immediately post-intervention (0 minutes), and 30 minutes post-intervention.

What was found

Arterial blood flow in the lateral thigh increased significantly after foam rolling compared with baseline (p ≤ 0.05). Relative increases were: - Vmax: +73.6% at 0 min (p < 0.001) and +52.7% at 30 min (p < 0.001) - TAMx: +53.2% at 0 min (p < 0.001) and +38.3% at 30 min (p = 0.002) - TAMn: +84.4% at 0 min (p < 0.001) and +68.2% at 30 min (p < 0.001) - Semiquantitative power Doppler score increased from 0.75 at baseline to 1.96 at 0 min and 2.04 at 30 min. Resistive index (RI) numerical values were not reported in the abstract.

Why it matters

This study provides direct sonographic evidence that self-myofascial release via foam rolling produces immediate and sustained (≥30 min) increases in local muscular arterial perfusion.

Limits

Small sample size (n = 21) restricted to young, healthy participants. Lacks a control group or sham intervention to isolate foam rolling from general movement effects. Long-term outcomes and functional recovery correlates were not evaluated.
