What was done
A systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted using PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane Library through December 2015 to evaluate the association between chronic periodontitis and erectile dysfunction. Study quality was appraised using the Newcastle-Ottawa Quality Assessment Scale. Five observational studies (four case-control and one cross-sectional) comprising 213,006 participants were pooled using a random-effects model to calculate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs).
What was found
Chronic periodontitis was significantly associated with an increased risk of erectile dysfunction (OR = 2.28, 95% CI: 1.50–3.48). High statistical heterogeneity was observed across the included studies (P < 0.001, I² = 97.8%). Subgroup and sensitivity analyses showed consistent results.
Why it matters
This meta-analysis documents an epidemiological link between oral chronic inflammatory disease and erectile dysfunction, suggesting potential shared vascular or systemic inflammatory mechanisms.
Limits
All included evidence comes from observational designs (primarily case-control and cross-sectional), preventing any determination of temporality or causality. Statistical heterogeneity was severe (I² = 97.8%). The abstract does not detail control for shared lifestyle and vascular confounders such as diabetes, smoking, cardiovascular disease, or age.
