What was done
Authors conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of sham-controlled randomized clinical trials evaluating coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) for motor dysfunction in Parkinson's disease (PD). Databases including PubMed, Google Scholar, CNKI, Wan-Fang, and the Cochrane Library were searched from inception to March 2016. Two investigators independently extracted data, and weighted mean differences (WMD) were calculated using random-effects models across 8 studies totaling 899 patients.
What was found
CoQ10 showed no statistically significant difference compared with placebo for UPDRS part 3 motor scores (pooled WMD = 1.02, p = 0.54). Effect sizes for UPDRS part 1, UPDRS part 2, and total UPDRS scores were also not significantly different from placebo (all p > 0.05). CoQ10 was well tolerated. Subgroup analysis revealed larger effect sizes in monocentric studies than in multicenter studies.
Why it matters
This synthesis provides moderate-to-high quality evidence that CoQ10 does not improve motor symptoms in Parkinson's disease, indicating it should not be recommended for routine PD management.
