Sixteen athletes across team and individual sports and ranging from Olympic to recreational levels (mean age 27.08 ± 6.48 years) completed in-depth, semi-structured interviews an average of 4.38 ± 3.14 days following an exceptional performance. Interview transcripts were evaluated using inductive thematic analysis to characterize subjective psychological states experienced during clutch performance.

Thematic analysis identified 12 distinct characteristics underlying clutch performance states. These included heightened and deliberate concentration, intense effort, heightened awareness, and perceptions of control, which qualitatively differentiated clutch states from other optimal psychological states such as flow.
