What was found

Pregnancy was associated with selective reductions in maternal gray matter volume in regions subserving social cognition, with changes consistent enough to correctly classify all women by pregnancy status. These structural reductions overlapped with neural regions responding to the mothers' babies postpartum, predicted postpartum maternal attachment scores, and persisted for at least two years post-pregnancy. Similar changes were not observed in fathers or nulliparous controls.
