What was done
Authors developed the Apathy-Motivation Index (AMI), a brief self-report measure of apathy and motivation for healthy populations. The instrument was evaluated using exploratory factor analysis in an initial cohort of 505 participants and confirmatory factor analysis in a separate cohort of 479 participants. Latent profile analysis was then conducted to assess associations between apathy subtypes and symptoms of depression, anhedonia, and fatigue.
What was found
Factor analysis identified three distinct subtypes of apathy: behavioural, social, and emotional. Latent profile analysis revealed four distinct profiles of apathy associated with varying levels of comorbid depression, anhedonia, and fatigue. No quantitative values, correlation coefficients, or model fit indices were reported in the abstract.
Why it matters
This tool provides a brief, validated method to separate apathy into specific behavioral, social, and emotional domains in non-clinical populations, aiding research into sub-clinical motivational deficits.
Limits
The abstract reports no numerical statistics, effect sizes, or test-retest reliability metrics. The study evaluated healthy participants via self-report cross-sectional cohorts without longitudinal tracking or objective behavioral measures.
