The Effect of Intermittent Head Cooling on Aerobic Performance in the Heat.

What was done
Twenty-two recreationally active men aged 18 to 23 completed three trials over 21 days. Following a baseline familiarization and maximal-effort graded exercise test (GXT) on a cycle ergometer, participants completed two counterbalanced experimental trials in hot, dry conditions (35 ± 1.0 °C, approximately 15-20% relative humidity). In both experimental trials, participants cycled for 40 minutes at 65% of VO2max, rested for 7 minutes with either head cooling or a placebo condition with cooling withheld, and immediately completed a maximal-effort GXT.
What was found
Peak power output on the GXT was significantly higher in the cooling condition compared to the placebo condition (304.23 ± 26.19 W cooling versus 291.68 ± 26.04 W placebo; p < 0.001).
Why it matters
Brief intermittent head cooling during rest periods may be a practical strategy to enhance subsequent aerobic exercise capacity in hot environments.
Limits
The sample was small and limited strictly to young recreationally active males. The abstract does not report physiological parameters such as core or skin temperature, subjective perceptual ratings, or whether participants could be effectively blinded to the cooling intervention.
