Older CD-1 mice were trained to lever press for opportunities to attack younger C57BL6/J mice across three experiments using operant procedures adapted from rodent drug addiction models. Investigators evaluated operant self-administration acquisition, progressive ratio responding, relapse to aggression seeking after forced abstinence or punishment-induced suppression, and choice-based voluntary suppression against alternative reinforcers. Cluster analysis was applied to aggression-related measures in a cohort of mice to characterize individual differences in compulsive aggressive behavior.

Mice demonstrated acquisition of operant self-administration for aggressive encounters and relapse vulnerability during abstinence.
