Dietary Fats and Cardiovascular Disease: A Presidential Advisory From the American Heart Association.

The American Heart Association synthesized scientific evidence from randomized controlled trials and prospective observational studies evaluating the effects of reducing dietary saturated fat and replacing it with polyunsaturated fat, monounsaturated fat, or carbohydrates on cardiovascular disease (CVD) and mortality.
What was found
Randomized controlled trials replacing saturated fat with polyunsaturated vegetable oil reduced CVD by approximately 30%, similar to the reduction achieved by statin therapy. Prospective observational studies showed lower saturated fat coupled with higher polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fat intake was associated with lower rates of CVD and all-cause mortality. Replacing saturated fat with refined carbohydrates and sugars was not associated with lower CVD and did not reduce CVD in clinical trials. Replacing saturated with unsaturated fat also lowered low-density lipoprotein cholesterol.
