What was done
Researchers investigated whether silently talking to oneself in the third person acts as an effortless form of self-control across two studies. In Study 1, participants reflected on feelings elicited by aversive images using either "I" or their own name while event-related potentials (ERPs) measured emotional reactivity (late positive potential) and cognitive control (stimulus preceding negativity). In Study 2, participants recalled negative autobiographical memories using the same linguistic manipulation while fMRI measured activation in a priori defined regions for self-referential processing (medial prefrontal cortex) and cognitive control.
What was found
The abstract reports no numerical values, effect sizes, or statistical test statistics. Study 1 showed that third-person self-talk reduced the late positive potential within the first second of viewing aversive images without enhancing stimulus preceding negativity. Study 2 showed third-person self-talk was linked to reduced medial prefrontal cortex activation during negative memory recall without increasing activation in cognitive control regions.
Why it matters
The findings suggest that third-person self-talk creates psychological distance, allowing rapid down-regulation of negative emotional reactivity without the engagement of effortful cognitive control mechanisms.
Limits
Participant sample sizes, demographics, and recruitment settings were not reported in the abstract. Outcomes were restricted to immediate laboratory neuroimaging markers during artificial tasks rather than long-term behavioral, clinical, or real-world emotional outcomes.
