What was done
Participants were assigned to make a public pledge committing to spend money over the subsequent 4 weeks either on others (experimental group) or on themselves (control group). Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was used to assess brain mechanisms during an independent decision-making task alongside changes in self-reported happiness.
What was found
The abstract reports no numerical values, test statistics, or effect sizes. Directionally, participants who pledged to spend money on others made more generous choices and had greater increases in self-reported happiness compared to controls. Neuroimaging showed that generous choices engaged the temporo-parietal junction (TPJ) more in the experimental group, differentially modulated TPJ-ventral striatum connectivity, and engaged striatal activity directly related to changes in happiness.
Why it matters
The study identifies a specific corticostriatal neural mechanism linking commitment-induced prosocial behavior with increased subjective well-being.
Limits
The abstract omits sample size, participant demographics, and all quantitative metrics (effect sizes, confidence intervals, p-values). Outcome measures relied on self-reported happiness and an artificial laboratory decision task following a pledge.
