What was done

An online cross-sectional survey was conducted among Dutch university students aged 18–30 years who recently experienced an alcohol hangover (n = 1,837). Participants rated single-item overall hangover severity and the severity of 22 individual symptoms on an 11-point scale (0 = absent to 10 = extreme). They also rated each symptom's negative impact on cognitive functioning, physical functioning, and mood using a 6-point Likert scale (0 = no impact to 5 = extreme).

What was found

Mean (SD) overall hangover severity was 6.1 (1.9). Sleepiness, tiredness, thirst, and concentration problems were the most frequent symptoms and had the highest severity ratings (ranging from 6.3 to 7.0). The four symptoms with the largest combined negative impact on mood, cognitive, and physical functioning were tiredness, sleepiness, headache, and concentration problems. Certain symptoms with moderate-to-high severity ratings (specifically thirst, reduced appetite, and regret) demonstrated little functional or mood impact.

Why it matters

Highlights that hangover symptom severity does not equate directly to functional impairment, identifying fatigue, sleepiness, headache, and cognitive deficits as the primary contributors to next-day impairment.

Limits

The study relied on retrospective self-report, introducing potential recall bias. The sample was restricted to Dutch students aged 18–30, limiting generalizability to broader or older populations. Functional and cognitive impacts were assessed via subjective ratings rather than objective performance tasks. Numerical impact scores for individual symptoms were omitted from the abstract.
