What was done

Data were analyzed from 4,775 adult participants in the 2009–2010 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) who self-reported normal bowel patterns. Stool frequency, stool consistency measured via the Bristol Stool Form Scale (BSFS), self-perceived bowel health, and demographic characteristics were evaluated.

What was found

In this cohort, 95.9% reported a stool frequency between 3 and 21 bowel movements per week. Normal stool consistency (encompassing 90% of respondents) ranged from BSFS types 3 to 5 for men and types 2 to 6 for women. After controlling for age, self-reported normalcy was associated with male sex, higher educational attainment, higher income, taking fewer than two daily medications, and high daily fiber intake. Hispanic ethnicity was significantly associated with reporting abnormal bowel habits.

Why it matters

This study provides empirical support for the standard clinical rule of thumb that 3 bowel movements per day to 3 per week represents normal frequency. It also establishes sex-specific reference ranges for stool consistency and identifies demographic correlates of perceived bowel health.

Limits

The analysis is cross-sectional and relies entirely on retrospective self-report rather than prospectively collected stool diaries. Effect sizes, odds ratios, and exact definitions for high fiber intake were not reported in the abstract, and data were restricted to a single NHANES cycle.
