What was done

Sixty children aged 8 to 12 years were randomized into two equal groups of 30 to chew either casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate (CPP-ACP) chewing gum or xylitol-containing chewing gum. Unstimulated and stimulated saliva samples were collected at baseline and at 15- and 30-minute intervals to evaluate salivary flow rate, pH, and buffering capacity.

What was found

Both chewing gums produced a significant increase in salivary flow rate, pH, and buffering capacity from baseline to immediately after spitting out the gum. No significant differences were observed between the CPP-ACP and xylitol groups for salivary flow rate or pH. However, the CPP-ACP group showed a significantly higher increase in salivary buffering capacity compared to the xylitol group. Why it matters
