What was done
Researchers evaluated the functional role of estrogen receptor-α-expressing (Esr1+) neurons in the ventrolateral part of the ventromedial hypothalamus (VMHvl) in female mice. They monitored neural activity during natural fighting behavior, functionally manipulated these cells through activation and inactivation paradigms, and characterized anatomical subdivisions, gene expression, projections, and activation patterns during mating versus fighting.
What was found
VMHvl Esr1+ cells were active during natural female attack behavior. Inactivating this cell population decreased female aggression, while activating it stimulated attack behavior. Furthermore, the female VMHvl was found to contain two anatomically distinct subdivisions with differential gene expression, neural projections, and activation profiles corresponding separately to mating and fighting.
