What was found
The adult pineal gland weighs under 0.2 g and primarily produces approximately 30 µg of melatonin per day. While trace concentrations of DMT have been detected in the brain, they are not high enough to produce psychoactive effects. Alternative mechanisms explain altered states during stress and near death without invoking endogenous DMT.
Why it matters
It counters unsupported assertions regarding endogenous pineal DMT synthesis and mystical states using basic physiological and mass-balance constraints.
