Thymus seeding progenitors (TSPs) comprise a heterogeneous population of multipotent and lineage-restricted cells. Quantitative murine studies cited indicate that the adult mouse thymus contains approximately 160 total niches for TSPs, with only about 6% open for seeding on average at steady-state.
Why it matters
Elucidating TSP niche dynamics and entry restrictions provides mechanistic targets to improve T-cell reconstitution and preserve thymic niches during pre-conditioning regimens for hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.
Limits
Findings are based entirely on basic science animal (murine) models rather than human clinical data. As a narrative review, it lacks systematic search criteria, quality appraisal, and clinical outcome measurements.
