The authors compiled and analyzed historical lifespan records (>3,000 data points) of captive naked mole-rats (*Heterocephalus glaber*) using Kaplan-Meier survival analyses to determine if their mortality hazard accelerates exponentially with age according to Gompertzian laws.

A substantial proportion of naked mole-rats survived to 30 years of age (maximum lifespan >30 years). Unlike other studied mammals, the age-specific hazard of mortality did not increase with age—even up to 25-fold past the age of reproductive maturity—and this pattern was independent of sex or breeding status. Specific hazard rate values and confidence intervals were not reported in the abstract.
Why it matters
This study provides evidence of a non-Gompertzian mammal, suggesting that demographic aging is not biologically inevitable across all mammalian species and establishing the naked mole-rat as a unique model for understanding biological resistance to aging.
