Randomized clinical trials, observational studies, and case reports were reviewed, with four publications meeting criteria for quantitative synthesis. Evidence quality was appraised using the GRADE framework.
What was found
The abstract reports no specific numerical outcomes, effect sizes, or confidence intervals. Individual included studies showed no statistically significant improvements in neuropsychiatric symptoms, though the authors note limited overall evidence suggesting possible symptom reduction in select subsets of the PANDAS/PANS population.
Why it matters
Despite widespread clinical use of antibiotics for psychiatric symptoms in PANDAS and PANS, empirical support outside of treating active bacterial infection remains sparse and inconclusive.
Limits
The review identified only four eligible studies for quantitative synthesis. The abstract lacks effect sizes, risk-of-bias metrics, participant numbers, and adverse event data. Furthermore, controlled comparative trials and investigations into the safety and efficacy of long-term antibiotic regimens are lacking.
