What was done

The authors reviewed evidence examining the relationship between intrauterine exposure to maternal diabetes (gestational diabetes, type 1 diabetes, and type 2 diabetes) and subsequent risks of obesity and abnormal glucose tolerance (AGT) in offspring. The review examined observational cohorts as well as follow-up data from two randomized controlled trials assessing maternal treatment for gestational diabetes.

What was found

Offspring of mothers with gestational diabetes have an increased incidence of obesity, overweight, and AGT (elevated by age 7 in untreated cases), which remains an independent risk factor after adjusting for maternal prepregnancy BMI. Offspring follow-up from two randomized trials of gestational diabetes treatment showed limited impact, with lower prevalence of obesity and impaired fasting glucose observed only in some 7-year-old girls. Offspring of mothers with type 1 diabetes also had higher risks of overweight, obesity, and type 2 diabetes independent of maternal BMI. Evidence regarding offspring of mothers with type 2 diabetes was noted to be limited.
