What was done
Participants observed a painful event delivered to a hand labeled with their own religion (ingroup) or a different religion (outgroup) during neuroimaging. Researchers evaluated whether minimal text labels modulated empathy-related brain activity and trained a multivariate classifier on mean activity across empathy-related brain regions to discriminate ingroup from outgroup conditions, testing generalization across validation experiments with arbitrary group assignments.
What was found
Neural empathic responses were larger for hands labeled with a participant's own religion compared to an outgroup religion. This bias correlated positively with self-reported empathy. A multivariate classifier discriminated ingroup from outgroup with 72% accuracy, and classifier confidence correlated with belief certainty. The classifier generalized to arbitrary group assignments. No sample sizes, effect sizes, p-values, or confidence intervals were reported in the abstract.
Why it matters
It demonstrates that empathy-related neural responses are modulated by minimal group labels and that a single multivariate model can classify both long-held and arbitrary group distinctions from neural patterns.

The abstract omits sample sizes, participant demographics, and specific statistical precision metrics. The findings rely on artificial laboratory stimuli (labeled hands receiving painful stimuli) which may not directly reflect complex real-world intergroup behavior.
