Participants observed a painful event delivered to a hand labeled with their own religion (ingroup) or a different religion (outgroup) during neuroimaging. Researchers evaluated whether minimal text labels modulated empathy-related brain activity and trained a multivariate classifier on mean activity across empathy-related brain regions to discriminate ingroup from outgroup conditions, testing generalization across validation experiments with arbitrary group assignments.

Neural empathic responses were larger for hands labeled with a participant's own religion compared to an outgroup religion. This bias correlated positively with self-reported empathy.
