Effect of Cardiorespiratory Fitness on Academic Achievement is Stronger in High-SES Elementary Schools Compared to Low.

What was done
Researchers conducted a repeated cross-sectional analysis of Georgia elementary schools between 2011 and 2014 (approximately 1,138 schools per year). Using multivariable beta regression, they evaluated the association between the proportion of 4th and 5th graders meeting cardiorespiratory fitness standards and the proportion of 5th graders passing standardized tests in Reading, English and Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies, testing for effect modification by school-level socioeconomic status (SES), racial composition, and urbanicity.
What was found
Every 10-percentage-point increase in school-level cardiorespiratory fitness was associated with higher estimated odds of passing the mathematics standardized test in high-SES schools (OR: 1.15; 95% CI: 1.09, 1.22) compared to low-SES schools (OR: 1.04; 95% CI: 1.02, 1.05). Similar patterns were observed for other academic subjects. No effect modification was found for racial composition or urbanicity.
Why it matters
The findings suggest that the academic benefits associated with cardiorespiratory fitness may be attenuated in lower-SES schools, meaning physical fitness interventions alone may be less effective in overcoming broader socioeconomic disadvantages.
Limits
The study is observational and relies on school-level aggregate data rather than individual-level data, which risks ecological fallacy. Potential residual confounders at the student, teacher, and neighborhood levels were not captured, and causal relationships cannot be inferred.
