Seven experienced personal trainers performed 4 variations of the barbell hip thrust using a load of 40% of their one-repetition maximum (8 repetitions per variation, with 3 minutes of rest between sets). Variations modified foot distance from the body and the intentional direction of applied force (hip external rotation and knee flexion). Surface electromyography (EMG) was measured in the rectus femoris, vastus medialis, vastus lateralis, gluteus maximus, gluteus medius, biceps femoris, and semitendinosus.
