What Does the n -Back Task Measure as We Get Older? Relations Between Working-Memory Measures and Other Cognitive Functions Across the Lifespan.

What was done
Researchers evaluated the construct validity of the computerized n-back task across the lifespan in 533 participants aged 20 to 80 years. Participants were divided into three age groups: young (20-40), middle-aged (41-60), and old (61-80 years). Participants completed n-back tasks alongside a battery of psychometric tests measuring attention, memory, executive control, and crystallized intelligence (vocabulary choice test). Correlation analyses were performed separately within each age group to evaluate relationships between n-back performance metrics (reaction times and target detection) and specific cognitive domains.
What was found
Reaction times progressively increased and the proportion of detected targets decreased from younger to older cohorts. Age-related impairments occurred across all psychometric tests except the vocabulary choice test. In young adults, n-back performance was most strongly related to executive functions. In middle-aged adults, performance correlated with a combination of attentional and executive processes. In older adults, performance was primarily associated with attentional, verbal memory, and updating processes, and to a lesser extent executive processes. Why it matters
These findings suggest that the n-back task engages different cognitive mechanisms across the lifespan rather than measuring a uniform construct. Researchers comparing working memory across age cohorts cannot assume the task reflects identical underlying cognitive operations in young and older adults.

The cross-sectional design cannot differentiate true age-related developmental shifts from cohort effects.
