A systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted across observational studies comparing the risk of developing pneumonia in patients receiving benzodiazepines or benzodiazepine-related drugs (BZRDs) versus unexposed individuals. Risk was also evaluated across different exposure windows (current, recent, and past use).

What was found

Across 10 included studies (12 citations) covering more than 120,000 pneumonia cases, BZRD use was associated with an increased odds of pneumonia (pooled OR = 1.25; 95% CI, 1.09-1.44). Subgroup analysis by exposure timing showed statistically significant increases among current users (OR = 1.4; 95% CI, 1.22-1.6) and recent users (OR = 1.38; 95% CI, 1.06-1.8), but not past users (OR = 1.11; 95% CI, 0.96-1.27).

Why it matters

The findings demonstrate a temporal association between active or recent benzodiazepine exposure and pneumonia, highlighting the importance of evaluating pneumonia risk factors before prescribing BZRDs.

Limits
