Healthy adults were categorized as high frequency recallers (HFRs, n = 19) or low frequency recallers (LFRs, n = 17) of dreams and underwent polysomnography on two non-consecutive nights. The authors compared wake after sleep onset, total nocturnal awakenings, awakenings stratified by sleep stage (REM vs. NREM), and REM density as an index of dream production.

What was found

Qualitatively, HFRs spent significantly more time awake after sleep onset and had significantly more total awakenings across the night than LFRs.
