C57BL/6 mice were fed either a 40% calorie restriction (CR) diet or an ad libitum diet for 3 months, initiated across three age stages: young (3 months), middle-aged (12 months), and old (19 months). What was found
Age alone was associated with adipocyte enlargement, reduced WAT beiging, and declined BAT thermogenic and β-oxidational function. CR attenuated adipocyte enlargement and preserved WAT beiging potential across all age groups in inguinal WAT, and in young and old cohorts in epididymal WAT. In contrast, BAT thermogenic and β-oxidational function further declined following CR in young mice. Why it matters
