What was done

A systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted across electronic databases to evaluate the association between caffeine and coffee consumption and Parkinson's disease (PD) risk and progression. Thirteen studies meeting diagnostic criteria and reporting caffeine content were included: 9 healthy cohorts assessing incident PD risk and 4 PD cohorts assessing progression outcomes (dyskinesia, motor fluctuations, symptom onset, and levodopa initiation).

What was found

In the healthy cohort (9 studies), regular caffeine consumption was associated with a significantly lower risk of incident PD (HR = 0.797, 95% CI = 0.748–0.849, p < 0.001). In the PD cohort (4 studies), caffeine consumption was associated with a significantly lower rate of PD progression (HR = 0.834, 95% CI = 0.707–0.984, p = 0.03).

Why it matters

This study provides synthesized observational evidence that caffeine intake is associated with both reduced risk of developing Parkinson's disease and slower progression after diagnosis.

Limits

The analysis is restricted to observational cohort studies, precluding causal inference due to potential confounding or reverse causation. Progression outcomes pooled heterogeneous clinical endpoints across only four studies, and the abstract does not report participant counts or specific dose-response thresholds.
