Qualitatively, decontamination using soap and water, alcohols, bleach, microwave heat, or high dry heat degrades respirator materials and renders them nonfunctional. In contrast, UV light, steam, low dry heat, ethylene oxide, and vaporized hydrogen peroxide appear viable for decontamination without destroying filtration or fit. Rotating respirators with a 72-hour rest interval to allow natural time decontamination is also reported as a viable strategy.
