What was done
Authors searched PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane databases through November 2019 to evaluate the association between sleep duration and prostate cancer risk in men. Data were extracted and pooled using a random-effects model to calculate pooled risk ratios (RRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for short and long sleep durations.
What was found
The meta-analysis included 6 studies. Neither short sleep (RR = 0.99, 95% CI: 0.91–1.07, P = .74) nor long sleep (RR = 0.88, 95% CI: 0.75–1.04, P = .15) showed a statistically significant association with prostate cancer risk.
Why it matters
This review synthesizes available observational evidence to show that sleep duration does not appear to significantly impact prostate cancer risk.
Limits
The total sample size in participants is not reported in the abstract, and the meta-analysis included only 6 studies. Cutoffs defining short versus long sleep durations are not detailed in the abstract, and residual confounding inherent to observational designs cannot be ruled out.
