What was done

The author reviewed literature comparing self-reported penile dimensions against studies where physical measurements were conducted directly by researchers. The synthesis aggregated data from 10 studies measuring erect penises (n = 1,629) and 21 studies measuring stretched penises (n = 13,719) to evaluate actual normative sizes and address clinical implications for male body image and counseling.

What was found

Studies relying on self-report yielded biased means of roughly 6.2 inches (15.75 cm) or higher. Across researcher-measured studies, the combined mean erect length was 5.36 inches (13.61 cm) and the combined mean stretched length was approximately 5.11 inches (12.98 cm). The true population average erect length is estimated between 5.1 and 5.5 inches (12.95–13.97 cm), likely toward the lower bound when accounting for persistent volunteer bias.

Why it matters

Misconceptions about average penis size lead men with normal anatomy to experience distress and seek risky penile augmentation procedures. Providing factual normative data offers clinicians a baseline tool for psychological counseling.

Limits

The abstract describes a narrative review rather than a preregistered systematic review or formal meta-analysis with confidence intervals. Residual volunteer bias persists even in researcher-measured studies. Variations in measurement technique, erectile state induction, flaccid dimensions, girth, and demographic details are not reported in the abstract.
