The authors expanded prior retrospective health analyses (previously conducted on Golden Retrievers, Labrador Retrievers, and German Shepherd Dogs) to evaluate 29 additional dog breeds and three varieties of Poodles (35 breeds total). They analyzed veterinary records to examine associations between the age of neutering (or remaining intact), sex, and the subsequent occurrence of joint disorders (hip dysplasia, cranial cruciate ligament tear/rupture, elbow dysplasia), specific cancers (lymphoma, mast cell tumor, hemangiosarcoma, osteosarcoma), and urinary incontinence.

What was found

Major breed-specific differences were observed regarding vulnerability to joint disorders and cancers after neutering. For most breeds, neutering age could be selected without increasing risks.
