Authors searched PubMed, Medline, and Embase through March 19, 2020, to identify randomized controlled trials evaluating resveratrol supplementation in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The meta-analysis pooled data from 7 RCTs comprising 302 patients. Resveratrol doses ranged from 500 mg to 3000 mg per day, administered over 56 to 180 days.

What was found

Resveratrol supplementation, irrespective of dose or duration, did not significantly affect analyzed NAFLD parameters. The only statistically significant finding was an increase in alanine aminotransferase (ALT) following resveratrol administration (p = 0.041). Exact effect sizes, confidence intervals, and specific non-significant numerical values were not reported in the abstract.

Why it matters

Despite proposed antioxidant and anti-inflammatory mechanisms, pooled clinical evidence does not support the efficacy of resveratrol supplementation as a treatment for NAFLD.
