Integrated childhood stress mediated the association between father absence and early menarcheal timing, and the total effect of father absence on menarcheal timing was reduced after accounting for childhood stress. The abstract reports no numerical effect sizes, correlation coefficients, or confidence intervals.
Why it matters
The findings indicate that earlier pubertal timing associated with father absence may be largely driven by the broader psychosocial stress of family disruption rather than a direct paternal effect alone.
Limits
The synthesis included only 7 studies, and the abstract omits quantitative effect estimates, p-values, and confidence intervals. Observational designs cannot definitively establish causality or rule out confounding from socioeconomic status, maternal age at menarche, or shared genetics.
