A scoping review of Embase, MEDLINE, Google Scholar (searched through April 6, 2020), and public health agency guidelines was conducted to evaluate the efficacy, usability, and accessibility of cloth masks in healthcare and community settings. Nine articles met the inclusion criteria after full-text screening.
What was found
The abstract reports no numerical measurements or effect sizes. Household fabrics such as cotton T-shirts and towels demonstrated some filtration efficacy and potential for droplet retention. Particle penetration was higher in cloth masks than in surgical masks or N95 respirators. Cloth masks provided limited inward protection in high-risk healthcare settings, but were found to have utility for outward protection (source control) in low-risk community contexts during mask shortages.

Limits
