Starting from the MitoCarta2.0 catalog (which integrated sequence features and mass spectrometry from 14 murine tissues), the authors manually reviewed the mammalian mitochondrial proteome. They removed 100 genes and added 78 genes, while manually curating sub-mitochondrial localization across four compartments (matrix, inner membrane, intermembrane space, outer membrane) and assigning genes to hierarchical functional pathways.
