What was done

The authors recalculated Estimated Average Requirements (EARs) and Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDAs) for US adults by adjusting 1997 Dietary Reference Intake (DRI) values to modern 2011–2014 mean US adult body weights across three coefficient of variation (CV) models (10% standard assumption, 20% USDA study-derived, and 30% combined human balance data).

What was found

Body-weight-corrected EARs rose 17% in men (330–350 to 386–409 mg/d) and 25% in women (255–265 to 319–332 mg/d). Compared to 1997 RDAs (400–420 mg/d for men, 310–320 mg/d for women), revised RDAs were: - 10% CV: 463–491 mg/d for men (+16.5%) and 383–398 mg/d for women (+23.5%) - 20% CV: 540–573 mg/d for men (+35.5%) and 447–465 mg/d for women (+44.5%) - 30% CV: 617–654 mg/d for men (+55%) and 511–531 mg/d for women (+65.5%) Overall, adjusted RDAs are 60–235 mg/d higher for men and 70–210 mg/d higher for women.

Why it matters

Existing dietary guidelines may systematically underestimate nutritional needs for current populations because they rely on outdated reference body weights that fall below current averages.

Limits

The study is a mathematical recalculation that presents no new experimental or human clinical trial data. The model scales requirements linearly with total body weight without differentiating adipose tissue from lean muscle mass, and exact population requirement variance remains debated.
