Autonomic Tone and Baroreflex Sensitivity during 70° Head-up Tilt in Yoga Practitioners.

In a comparative study at AIIMS New Delhi, autonomic function and baroreflex sensitivity (BRS) were evaluated in 80 healthy participants: 40 yoga practitioners (mean age 29.93 ± 7.57 years) and 40 yoga-naïve individuals (mean age 31.08 ± 7.31 years). Cardiovascular variability—including heart rate variability (HRV), blood pressure variability, and BRS—was measured during an orthostatic challenge using a 70° head-up tilt (HUT) protocol.
What was found
During the 70° HUT, yoga practitioners had significantly higher R-R interval (P = 0.042), root mean square of successive differences (RMSSD, P = 0.039), standard deviation of instantaneous beat-to-beat variability (SD1, P = 0.039), sequence BRS (P = 0.017), and alpha low-frequency spectral BRS (P = 0.002) compared to naïve controls. Yoga practitioners also showed a greater delta decrease in R-R interval (P = 0.033) and BRS (P < 0.01). Absolute measurement values and confidence intervals were not reported in the abstract.
Why it matters
This study indicates that regular yoga practice is associated with higher resting and orthostatic parasympathetic tone alongside enhanced baroreflex sensitivity, suggesting improved cardiovascular autonomic buffering during positional stress.
Limits
The observational, cross-sectional design cannot prove that yoga caused the autonomic differences, as unmeasured lifestyle factors or baseline fitness could confound the results. The abstract provides P-values but omits absolute numbers, effect sizes, and duration or style of yoga practice. The sample was restricted to young, healthy adults at a single center.
